Background

Photograph of computerThe TOIA Project is funded by JISC as part of the Exchange for Learning (X4L) Programme.

The tools have been developed by TOIA in collaboration with Freedom2Learn and are based around the IMS Question and Test Interoperability Specification (QTI). Freedom2Learn is a Joint Venture between Excelsoft Technologies, Mysore, India (www.excelindia.com) and Dynamic Distance Learning, Newcastle,UK (www.ddluk.com).

TOIA brings together practitioners from UK Further and Higher Education to pool experience and expertise in the fields of online assessment, interoperability, technological education and involvement in UK and European funded projects. TOIA is a consortium of the following institutions:


Niall runs the CETIS Assessment SIG and led both the Clyde Virtual University project and the Scottish Computer Assisted Assessment Network. Top

Jalshan Sabir - Project Manager
Jalshan joined the project in January 2004. She has been involved with commercial IT training for the last ten years and is interested in n-tier web applications and interoperable data structures. Top

Hugh Davis
Hugh was one of the inventors of Microcosm and is an active researcher and senior lecturer in the areas of hypermedia and assessment through involvement with projects such as e3an. Top

Su White
Su leads the e3an Project based at Southampton and is also Learning and Teaching Co-ordinator for the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Top

Grainne Conole - Evaluator
Former Director of the Institute for Learning and Research Technology at the University of Bristol. Grainne is currently Chair in Educational Innovation in Post-Compulsory Education at Southampton's Research and Graduate School of Education. Top

Steve Jeyes
Steve was a Senior Lecturer in further education for 17 years and worked on delivering and managing a range of Computing courses from GCSE to Degree Level at North Lincolnshire College. In 1997 moved from teaching computing to the world of learning technologies. He has specialised in the development of models by which learning material can be stored, accessed, customised and delivered with a specific focus on the employment of interoperability standards. He is now employed by Edexcel International to develop and implement learning technology-based Higher National Diplomas. He jointly manages the Further Education Special Interest Group for the JISC funded Centre for Education Technology Interoperability Standards (CETIS) on behalf of Newark and Sherwood College and project manages the ICONEX (Interactive Content Exchange) project for the University of Hull. He is an X4L panel member and consultant to the JISC JORUM project. Top

George is the Head of the Faculty of Information Technology and Computing at Glenrothes. Top

Graeme Clark
Graeme works within the Faculty of Information Technology and Computing. Top

Myles Danson
Myles is the CAA Manager at Loughborough and organisor of the International Computer-Assisted Assessment Conference. Top

Bryan Dawson
Bryan works alongside Myles on CAA and as a Learning and Teaching Technology Officer. He was also a key member of the CAA Centre project. Top

Alison Hudson
Alison Hudson is Head of the Centre for Multimedia in Education in the Learning and Teaching Institute at Sheffield Hallam University. Her main responsibility is to support the development and integration of ICT and Multimedia within the context of the University's Learning Teaching and Assessment Strategy through research, development and the production of material. Top

Grant Naylor
A senior multimedia developer within the Learning and Teaching Institute at Sheffield Hallam University. Responsible for the design and production of multimedia material to support teaching, learning and assessment within virtual learning environments and web-based applications. Top

John Gray
The Principal, John Gray has been pro-active in influencing national policy concerning the use of ICT within FE. He has recently completed being a member of the DELG (Distributed Electronic Learning Group) which has signalled the way forward for the application of ICT within the post-16 education sector. Top

Clive Church
Clive is based at Newark and Sherwood College where he co-ordinates the FE Focus Group for the JISC funded Centre for Technology Interoperability Standards. Top
