Plans for the extended period of funding

Photograph of computer TOIA has been granted an extension to continue the project until January 2007. Part of the funding includes the upgrading of the TOIA software tool to become QTI version 2.0 compliant and other minor modifications.

An outline of the requirements are as follows:

Upgrade TOIA to work with QTI version 2.0. The requirements for this include the following:

  • TOIA should be able import both QTI v1.2.1 and QTI v2.0 questions.
    • On import, offer to convert to QTI v2.0
  • TOIA should export to both QTI v1.2.1 and QTI v2.0 questions - however,
    • Only QTI 1.2.1 items can be exported both as v1.2.1 or v2.0
    • QTI v2.0 items can only be exported as QTI v2.0
  • Importing and exporting of content packages should behave in an identical fashion to the import and export of questions.

Fix Accessibility problems in current version. Two key issues have to be solved

  1. Positioning of checkboxes and radio buttons. Currently these control appear left of the text making it difficult to work when using screen-readers who see the option before the label when all flow should be left-to-right.
    • Rather than changing the layout of such items for ALL questions, we would like it to be an option within the assessment preferences.
  2. Displaying of shortcut keys - Currently displayed for every assessment, we would prefer it to be an option in the Schedule to allow the test administrator to decide on whether to always show them, or to have an interactive control to show/hide the shortcuts during the assessment.

We are hoping to be able to fund a few other improvements so watch out for further announcements.
